seasons

(8) Earth and space. The student knows that there are recognizable patterns in the natural world and among objects in the sky. The student is expected to:(A) observe and describe weather changes from day to day and over seasons;(B) identify events that have repeating patterns, including seasons of the year and day and night; and(C) observe, describe, and illustrate objects in the sky such as the clouds, Moon, and stars, including the Sun.

The state of Texas deem the proceeding as "essential knowledge and skills" for students in kindergarten. For my work, I have spent a fair bit of time observing kindergarteners learning about the four seasons. I am always surprised and confused why kindergarteners in Texas believe a winter scene includes snowmen. The only snowmen I have seen are palm sized and made from snow scraped from an entire front yard or marshmallows. Winter in Texas is brown and muddy, with an odd threat of sleet. So winter isn't really worth drawing - hardly worth the 1/4 of construction paper it's given.

Perhaps children in Texas ought to give 1/2 their paper to Summer - hot, hotter and miserable. Swimming and snow cones are the only enjoyable daytime activities. Summer stretches until October if we are lucky and straight through Christmas when we're not.

But spring, spring in Texas is amazing. Mornings are cool and pleasant, walking to school is chilly and walking home is nice. Wildflowers cover everything. Bluebonnets are blooming and even the highways are cheerful. It is so wonderful that I can almost forgive winter for being so brown and boring and pretend summer will not be so miserable.
